As a death doula and transition guide, I provide physical, mental, psychological, emotional and spiritual support to another, in the time leading up to, and during the death transition. My work can begin at any time that someone feels they would benefit from my support - from the time of a terminal diagnosis to moments before dying. Some choose to engage with me in this work in preparation for their death, even if it is not imminent.
No one should die alone, if they do not choose to. There is no greater gift we can give, or get, than to hold space for one another in death, as in birth. Part of what holding space means is to have our needs understood and addressed to maximize the amount of peace and comfort we can experience during our time of transitioning. Everyone has a right to make conscious decisions about how they engage with their death.
I strongly believe birth and death are part of the great circle of life, and if we are able to focus on love, and celebrating life (as we do in birth), than we can experience the fullness of our lives and our loved ones lives as we transition.
I hold space for people as well as animals in death.
My work encompasses many aspects, which is individual for everyone, and may include:
Creating a vigil plan incorporating family and the circle of loved ones, including children and pets
Building awareness of anticipatory grief and how to work with it
Creating legacy projects & acts of remembrance
Working with regrets, unfinished business and acts of closure
discussion of personal rituals & spiritual practicesAdvising on options with disposition of the body
Interacting with a care plan that can may include hospice and/or palliative care
Music thanatology, plant medicine, personal guided meditations, somatic & sensory work
Build community supporting death education
While on the journey of our lives, we can learn to ground ourselves within the body, which can only aid us when our time comes to receive death. it can also in the meantime greatly enhance our lives!
Sensory and somatic awareness are an untapped ability we all possess and share with other animals. Learning more of our relationship with the 5 senses we all know (touch, taste, smell, hear, and see) and the 6th (feeling) and 7th (emotion), can be of major significance to our lives, and a fuller awareness of self. This relationship can bring us closer to integration with the rhythm of life; the essence of well-being, of wholeness. It is ours to look further into these natural gifts we possess to help ourselves in living more authentically, and by extension - learning more about how to receive death when our times comes.
